This class will introduce students to the art of self-representation by discussing culturally relevant masterworks, creating visual mind-maps of identity, exploring mixed media and painting, learning color mixing, drawing the human form (emphasizing faces), and producing a final project that will represent the unique identity of every participant—as they define themselves. The teaching artist, together with the class, will decide how best to create a public presentation of their work.

This class is for ages 12 & up

Meet the Teaching Artist – Katherine Toukhy is a visual artist/educator living and working in Brooklyn, NY who specializes in culturally relevant curricula centering the rich experiences of groups typically underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream American narratives. From 2013 to 2015, she ran RASMI, an arts-empowerment program for local youth of Arab, African and South Asian descent. In NYC, she has worked with public school and college students as well as immigrant adults and women’s groups. Projects include 100 Years | 100 Women (Park Avenue Armory, The Laundromat Project), and The Khayamiyya Monument, an antiwar work based on the stories of those most affected by wars on terror.
