JCAL Reads – Reading and Discussion Series

October 13, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The featured text will be “The Civically Engaged Reader: A Diverse Collection of Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity.” The book includes short readings that invite reflection on civically engaged activity. Authors range from Aristotle to Kafka, Langston Hughes to Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie to Pablo Neruda.

JCAL Reads is made possible by Humanities NY and will be led by Stephanie D. Delia. She has been an immigration attorney for nearly 10 years and is the owner and managing attorney of the Law Office of Stephanie D. Delia. Prior to launching her private practice, Ms. Delia was the managing attorney at CUNY Citizenship Now, City Council Services, New York City’s largest College-based immigration program. Ms. Delia is not only an immigration attorney, but she is a passionate advocate for her clients and their families.

Talking points: Why and how do we choose to serve others? What is the nature of the relationship between those who serve and those who are served? If we serve, what sustains and renews us? How does our service impact our communities? The readings in this series — drawn from literature, philosophy, and religion — invite reflection on these and other questions.
