Queens Public Library Presents: A Tribute to Irving Burgie’s West Indian Song Book

Starring Mister Brandon Bain & Pauline Jean

On Friday, September 13, Emmy-nominated vocalist and visual storyteller, Mister Brandon Bain joins forces with celebrated Haitian world vocalist Pauline Jean for an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and Caribbean heritage. Together, they will bring to life selections from legendary composer Irving Burgie’s West Indian Song Book—a collection that helped introduce island folk songs from Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, and Trinidad to the world.

Burgie, best known as the writer of timeless classics like “Day-O (Banana Boat Song),” “Jamaica Farewell,”and “Island in the Sun,” created music that continues to resonate across generations. This performance carries a deeply personal connection: Bain’s great aunt, a member of Burgie’s choir, passed down her own copy of the Song Book to him—making this tribute not just a concert, but a continuation of legacy.

The evening will also showcase the brilliance of a powerhouse Caribbean ensemble.

Join us in celebrating Burgie’s enduring influence and the living tradition of Caribbean song, carried forward by a new generation of voices and instruments.

Register for up to 3 free tickets.
