Comic Books, Cartooning, Portfolio, and Stop-Motion Animation

Comic Book Creation and Cartoon Drawing for Kids – (Ages 7-11)

Kids will learn drawing techniques that will allow them to create stories starring original super heroes, Manga characters and humorous cartoons in their own comic books. Every student will take home a finished comic book at the conclusion of the class.

Event Dates and times

Classes will take place at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning from 11am to 12pm on the following dates:

October – 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th

November – 6th, 13th, 20th

December – 4th, 11th, 18th

January – 8th, 15th

The class includes the option of creating stop motion cartoon animation which may include traditional hand drawn cell animation, white board animation, cut paper animation, flip books, claymation, and object animation. The goal for the class is for students to either create their own comic book featuring their own original characters, or an animated video.

Students will also have an option to use this class to develop a portfolio for application and admission to arts programs and high schools. Comic Books,

Cartooning, Portfolio, and Stop-Motion Animation – (Ages 12 and up) will take place 12:30pm – 2pm on the following dates:

October – 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th

November – 6th, 13th, 20th

December – 4th, 11th, 18th

January – 8th, 15th

Meet the instructor – Alexander Shapiro is a professional cartoonist and illustrator whose work has appeared in various publications and websites, and whose clients have included CBS-TV, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Central Park Conservancy, and the Department of Environmental Protection. He has taught cartooning, graphic memoir, illustration, animation for teaching clients have included The Museum of the City of New York, The Queens Museum, The California College of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, and The DYCD Heroes Project as well as a resident artist in the New York City public school system
