Making Moves Dance Festival 2019 – Call for Choreographers (Deadline Extended: June 14, 2019)
CALL FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) invites New York City-based dance companies to apply to an open call for the Tenth Annual Making Moves Dance Festival 2019 (MMDF2019), celebrating Dance Across Cultures. Main Stage Indoor and Outdoor performances will take place on September 20 & 21, 2019 at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC). Dance conversations, workshops, showcase performances and community engagement programs (Community Build) will be taking place across JCAL’s campus throughout September.
JCAL, like Southeast Queens is in the midst of a renaissance; the community is growing and JCAL’s programming is developed to reflect its communities. Building Equity for the Immigrant and Indigenous Artists of Southeast Queens (Building Equity) is a two year project focused on reshaping JCAL’s programming processes. Building Equity is designed to cultivate stronger ties with the Southeast Queens’ population and gain greater “cultural competency” with local immigrant and indigenous populations that have not had significant presenting or community building support. Building Equity enables staff, immigrant and indigenous cultural groups, and all existing and newly reached communities to feel welcome with processes that support and meet unique needs of all of Queens’ and NYC’s cultural communities especially its historic diaspora, immigrant, and indigenous voices.
We encourage all choreographers working in all dance genres to apply. The Open Call is juries by well respected cultural leaders within the dance and performing arts communities.
JCAL encourages new, emerging and underrepresented professional choreographers to apply. JCAL serves one of the most diverse community’s in the United States and commits to offering an equal voice to all professionally minded choreographers throughout the application process.
Your application is important. The artists chosen to be a part of the MMDF 2019 Main Stage program become a part of the cultural mosaic that represents the creative diversity that is NYC. Rehearsals and open showcases will be scheduled as part of JCAL/JPAC’s Community Build programs and 2019 and 2020 dance season programs.
Making Moves offers four opportunities for choreographer/dance companies:
two new choreographer/groups: having had public performances in smaller venues including self produced. You will perform a 12-15 minute piece at an outdoor presentation. Each choreographer/group will receive a $175 stipend to present your work. An existing work is encouraged (Early evening).
Up to four early career professional choreographer/groups: having performed and produced by venues and been reviewed. You will perform a 15-25 minute piece each on the outdoor stage. Each group will receive a $450 stipend to present an existing work is encouraged. (Early Evening)
Up to four emerging(ed)/underrepresented professional choreographer/groups: having had public performances and reviews with a clear committed amount of time to choreographic process and have reached a personal movement quality that highlights your creative concepts. Your company will perform a 15 – 25 minute piece at an indoor stage presentation. Each group will receive a $750 stipend to present work. (Evening)
An opportunity for a choreographer to create a 30-45 minute work, commissioned by JCAL, which will be presented at both Evening performances. The choreographer will receive a $4,000 stipend to create a new work and will have access to JCAL’s rehearsal space for up to 80 hours. The commissioned artist will offer a community outreach program during the process of the commissioned work along with residency time to support the full development of the commissioned work.
Dance artists and companies including, but not limited to: modern/contemporary, physical theater, ballet, jazz, hip hop, musical theater and folk/world are invited to apply. Applications will be viewed by a panel of leading professionals and will be added to the archives of JCAL/JPAC for future curatorial consideration. Each group can request to be considered for more than one opportunity, but each selected group will only be awarded one opportunity. Please make sure you select all areas for which you’d like to be considered. All groups will be provided with 3 – 6 hours of rehearsal space the week prior and access to the JPAC stage (s) space for one dress rehearsal and one tech rehearsal prior to the day of the event. Each group will be offered marketing and access to the
Community Engagement Program.
Program Timeline: Applications are due on May 30th, 2019. The Panel will meet in June, 2019. Selected groups will be notified by Email by June 21st, 2019. Please do not call to inquire about the status of your application.
Eligibility: This opportunity is open to emerging and underrepresented New York City-based choreographers with bold ideas and a progressive/contemporary nature. Applicants must be older than 18 years old and must have been presented in a public format; students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be residents of New York City as of the application deadline or have a significant, documented track record of artistic activity in New York City. Queens residents will be given preference for this opportunity.
Selection Criteria: Accepted applicants will be chosen based on the strength of their submitted work. Panelists and JCAL’s MMDF Program Director will base choices on clarity of choreographic vision and artist statement, ability of the artist through visual aid, written or other form of communication, to share the choreographer’s commitment to purpose, aesthetic and technique, a performing company of quality that is trained to represent the work of the choreographer, and a desire to share vision and work.
Pre-deadline workshops will be offered to answer any questions that might arise and feedback regarding application will be offered once announcements are made. For feedback a scheduled appointment will be set up.
If you are chosen as the commissioned artist: A public program component is required for selected commission artist. This may be a workshop, master class, free public performance or another community-based activity. Public programs must take place in a JCAL studio. Additional funding of $500 will be available for the required public program. The selected choreographer will provide dancers, costumes, lighting, props, etc. out of the commissioned funds. Any future performances of the commission, whenever this piece is performed, the program will include commissioned by the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Annual Making Moves Dance Festival 2019 – Dance Across Cultures. New Opportunity for Visual and Performing Arts Artists and/or Companies (an open call application call will be announced and will become a part of JCAL’s ongoing call for creative artists from the community).
Community Engagement Program (CEP) a part of JCAL’s Community Build programming Performing Arts
Open opportunity for performing artists to lead 30-45 min workshop and showcase 5 minutes of work (in-progress or finished) during Making Moves Dance Festival. They will have an all access pass to workshops and performances during the Making Moves period.
Open opportunity for visual artists working within the performing arts genre or exploring the opportunity the performing arts are invited to apply and show works in JCAL galleries.
Community Engagement Program application is open and ongoing as part of JCAL’s Community Build. JCAL will provide indoor studio space and an outdoor stage, festival marketing along with company/artist name or logo included in the Making Moves brochure & archives.
